Shetland offers a range of official camp and caravan sites, located throughout the islands:
South Mainland:
Levenwick Campsite, tel. 01950 422207. A well maintained site, overlooking scenic Levenwick Bay. Situated 16miles south of Lerwick and 7 miles north of Sumburgh. 4 touring pitches and 12 tent pitches available.
Lerwick
Clickimin Caravan & Camp Site, tel. 01595 741000. The complex includes a 25m pool, leisure pools, flumes, outdoor lagoon, sports hall, squash courts, fitness suite, indoor bowls hall and bar. 20 touring pitches and 30 tent pitches available.
Central Mainland
Westings Camp Site, tel. 01595 840242. There is a small campsite equipped with shower, toilets and external power supply.
West Mainland
Skeld Caravan Site, tel. 01595 860287. Situated on the waterfront. Great for bird watching. Nature hide for seal and otter spotting. A spectacular coastline for walking and canoeing. Archaeological sites and lochs for fishing close by. 12 touring pitches and 12 tent pitches available.
Papa Stour
There is a small camp site at the pier next to the waiting room.
North Mainland
Braewick Cafe and Campsite, tel. 01806 503345. Spectacular view out over St. Magnus Bay. Craftshop and cafe on site. Ideal for fishing, birdwatching and hillwalking. Museum nearby. 10 touring pitches, 30 tent pitches and several wigwams available.
Delting Boating Club, tel. 01806 522 418. Situated alongside the clubhouse and marina with waterbased activities aplenty. Also spectacular coastal walks around Muckle Roe and Mavis Grind. Supermarket, restaurants and leisure centre nearby. 13 touring pitches available.
Whalsay
Oot Ower Lounge, tel. 01806 566 658. Power points for visitors with caravans or campers are available, as well as camping, toilet and shower facilities.
Fetlar
The Garths Campsite, tel. 01957 733227. Well maintained site with basic facilities. Within walking distance of the scenic Tresta beach. Ideal for bird watching and pleasant walking. 6 touring pitches and 12 tent pitches available.
Yell
Burravoe Pier Trust Campsite, tel. 01957 722 315. Availability is on a first come first served basis and payment is made through an honesty system. There are envelopes in the building for making payment and you post them in the letter box in the door. There are 4 fully serviced sites and power points for an extra 4 if needed, plus more room in the car park opposite. Several tents can also be accommodated.
Unst
Gardiesfauld Hostel, tel. 01957 755279. Caravan bays with hook-ups can be booked.
Camping Park
A park for camping only.
Touring Park
A park which offers touring pitches and may offer camping pitches.
Information for Campers and Caravanners
Apart from the official sites available, experienced campers can usually find an ideal spot, courtesy of the local farmers and crofters. Please also be aware of the Outdoor Access Code before you set up camp.
The Shetland attitude to campers is generally very hospitable and "wild" camping is not discouraged. Considerate campers are welcomed but you must always ask permission of the landowner before setting up camp.
Contact the nearest house, establish who the landowner is, and ask them whether or not you may camp there. Don't hesitate to ask their advice - they'll probably tell you whether the site is suitable, or will recommend an even better location for you.
Please avoid public water collection areas and resevoirs. If in doubt - ask. Toilet and waste disposal is the responsibility of the camper, and these tasks should be carried out in a discreet and responsible manner.
Caravans and Caravanettes
There are many secondary roads which lead to beautifully secluded situations for the owners of caravanettes, but we recommend that the owners of touring caravans check their routes carefully to ensure that the secondary roads are sufficiently wide for passing other vehicles and that they can turn at the end.
