2010 Photographic Competition
Hugh Harrop, judge and owner of Shetland Wildlife has awarded 1st, 2nd & 3rd prize to the following photographers:
WINNER - Juan Sola
Sometimes the best photographs are opportunistic, and this is a classic example! This photograph is beautifully composed with the main subject pin sharp and the secondary subject (the photographer) sitting well in the frame. Locking on to a bird flying towards you requires skill - not only for maintaining focus - but also for maintaining composition and correct exposure. All of these aspects have to be judged and implemented over a split second and Juan has achieved a magnificent image, worthy of first place in any competition.
2nd Place - Josie Jamieson
This striking image of three Killer Whales takes a worthy second place. It portrays just how close we see Killers hunting to the shores here in Shetland and the fact that Josie has got land to the fore and rear of the animals, amplifies this. There are lots of shots of Killer Whales around Shetland, but few that put the animals in such perspective. The competition requested "...breathtaking and original images which reflect and portray the outstanding wildlife Shetland has to offer...". Josie's image ticks all the boxes!
3rd Place - Anthony Marston
Imagine how many pictures of Puffins are taken every year here in Shetland? Tens of thousands I guess. The species is common, is exceedingly approachable and full of charisma; with that in mind, it takes a real stunner of a shot to catch my eye. This one did. Anthony has used 'DOF' (depth of field) very wisely here - the foreground blur of the grass and sullied pink thrift throws the focal point of the image to leave the viewer left looking directly at the bird and absorbing its behaviour. In summary, a creative shot with intelligent use of all the colours and light available - and a picture that really does tell a story.
