Jack Chesterman: Archaeology of Journeying

Jack Chesterman has had a longstanding painting and printmaking practice and has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad. His work is held in a number of private and public collections. He has also followed a career in Art and Design Education, working in a number of universities as both a lecturer and education manager. For some thirteen years he has visited Shetland annually.

Sumburgh Head opening for 2015 season with a blast from the past

Sumburgh Head Lighthouse, Visitor Centre and Nature Reserve will open its doors for an extended visitor season on Wednesday 1st April. To mark the occasion, the recently restored forghorn will sound its distinctive seven second blast every 90 seconds from 12.00 noon.

Solar Eclipse event at Sumburgh Head

10th March 2015

On Friday 20th March, there will be a dramatic total solar eclipse which occurs when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth and casts the darkest part of its shadow (the umbra) on Earth. The darkest point of the eclipse is almost as dark as night on some parts of the planet. In Shetland the eclipse will be approximately 97% and will be the darkest place in the UK.
