Exhibition - Unst Folk Abroad

As part of the Hamefarin 2010 celebrations, this exhibition hosts information on artefacts and letters that have been sent home to people in Unst from emigrated relatives.

Centrepiece of the exhibition is a WWI silk wedding dress sent home from Gibraltar by the childhood sweetheart of an Unst woman.

Fiddle Frenzy

Sunday 8th August 2010 - Sunday 15th August 2010

Enjoy a week of fiddle tuitions from talented local tutors.  Afternoons will include optional cultural trips to those who are interested.

Concerts will include performances by Catriona Macdonald, Chris Stout Theory and a special performance of Jenna Reid’s Celtic Connections commission, composed around the Shetland Bus story, and many of the usual local performers.

The additional workshops this year are once again highlighting the sense of place that comes from living and working in Shetland and is an inspiration for so many of our practising artists and musicians. These include Creative Writing, Textiles (knitting based techniques), and Painting and Drawing, and, of course, storytellers will be on hand to host the afternoon trips, concerts and the festival club in the Garrison Theatre.

Cunningsburgh Agricultural Show

Ranger Guided Walk: Noss

Meet at Noss car park at 11.30am.  Catch the 11am ferry from Lerwick to Bressay (3 miles from ferry to Noss car park).  If you require transport across Bressay please contact Shetland Amenity Trust on 01595 694688.

Guided walk duration: 4-5 hours.

Note: This walk contains some steep sections and sheer cliffs.

Shetland Art Holidays

These weekend workshops will be focused on the natural and built landscapes of Shetland, giving participants the opportunity to sketch and paint a range of subject matter including our rugged coastlines, traditional croft houses and the historic lanes of Lerwick. Textiles Mini-Tour

4 Day Shetland Isles Textiles Mini-Tour with ASF Shetland.

 

Day One: A day of visits and talks at the Shetland Museum, the Textile Museum, the Wool Brokers, and the Sandness Spinning Mill.  Finish in the North Isles with dinner and a 'Meet your Maker!' event.

Day Two: Ideas and inspirations.  Capture them in your own keepsake memory book.  Lunch and 'Aspects of Shetland' talk.  Spinning demonstration and workshop - Try your hand at spinning Shetland wool.

Day Three: Lace knitting demonstration workshop.  Lunch and 'Aspects of Shetland' talk.  Tour Unst, visiting local textiles studios, makers and shops.

Day Four: 'Knitting the Landscape' demonstration and workshop.  Lunch at ASF Shetland and workshop on designs from your memory books.  Needle felting workshop - making a felted keepsake from your time with the North.  Visit to Erlangen, Mossbank for dinner and 'Aspects of Shetland' talk.  Return to Lerwick.

Cost per person £320 includes meals, transport, accommodation, visits and fees.  Alternative accommodation will attract a supplement.  Preliminary programme may be subject to change.
