Shetland Arts is delighted to announce that the work of eminent local photographer Dennis Coutts will be showcased at Bonhoga Gallery for the first exhibition of 2012 on Friday 20th January. Dennis has been photographing Shetland’s society for over 60 years and his work is a fascinating catalogue of life throughout the islands. For this exhibition work has been selected from the 1960s and represents Shetland in the pre-oil era.

The exhibition will appeal to anyone with an interest in the stories and characters from this period in Shetland’s history. While life was very different then, these stunning black and white photographs reflect a character of life in Shetland which is timeless and remains in many ways unchanged today.

Shetland Accordion & Fiddle Festival

Thursday 11th October 2012 - Monday 15th October 2012

Shetland's 25th Accordion & Fiddle Festival will be held between 11th - 15th October 2012.

The annual festival mainly concentrates on music provided by Shetland's two most popular instruments - the accordion and the fiddle.

The festival takes place over a hectic five-day period in early October. As with Shetland Folk Festival, musicians from all over the world perform at the event, although emphasis is on Scottish Dance music. Local musicians feature prominently in the event line-up.  Tunes are swapped and musicians make new friends in the sessions that are an important part of the festival; younger musicians find them especially valuable in broadening their experience.

Adopting the tried and trusted format of widespread community involvement, the event incorporates most areas of Shetland. It culminates in one of the biggest traditional dances to take place anywhere in the UK. Around a dozen different dance bands take it in turn to perform to 1,500 enthusiasts in the local sports centre in what amounts to a highly enjoyable "traditional rave".

The festival is a must for anyone who enjoys the sound of traditional music and has the stamina to absorb it for four hectic days.

Peerie Willie Johnson Guitar Festival 2012

Friday 26th October 2012 - Sunday 28th October 2012

Shetland is, more often than not, musically associated with the fiddle for very obvious reasons. However one of our best-loved musicians was the internationally acclaimed guitarist 'Peerie' Willie Johnson, who sadly passed away in summer 2007 ('peerie' is the Shetland word for small).

In honour of his already assured place in Shetland music history and in recognition of what he has done for guitar music in general this festival focuses on guitar music in all its forms, including workshops on the accompaniment style Willie himself 'invented'.

The Thomas Fraser Festival

Thursday 8th November 2012 - Sunday 11th November 2012

THE DATES FOR THE 2012 THOMAS FRASER FESTIVAL ARE THURSDAY 8TH - SUNDAY 11TH NOVEMBER.

New CD release pushed back to 2012 (21-Mar)
The sixth Thomas Fraser CD release has been pushed back to November 2012. The date has been changed due to the discovery of another batch of cassette tapes which were found in January 2011. Thirty one cassettes were found and although it is unlikely that the tapes will feature any new material, each must be gone through just in case.

If you are interested in visiting Shetland for the Memorial Festival, please do not hesitate to get in touch. The Shetland tourism site Visit Shetland is a good resource to find our more about getting to Shetland (not as difficult as you would think) and the attractions on offer. A word of caution, book your tickets early, as Shetland-Music says, the Memorial Festival is the fastest selling ticket in Shetland.

The format is usually as follows: the Thursday evening sees a traditional sit-down concert. This evening is usually more reserved and is shorter in length. Ticket prices are £10 each. There are no bar facilities. Friday and Saturday nights are full length evenings with bar facilties and supper. Ticket prices are now £14.00 each.
